This is American Courant's privacy notice. We try to keep this readable. If anything is unclear, email admin@americancourant.com.

What we collect

When you subscribe to our email list

• Your email address.
• A short label noting where you signed up (for example, footer or article:slug).
• An irreversible hash of your IP address. We compute a SHA-256 of your IP combined with a server-side secret. We do not store the raw IP.
• Your browser's user-agent string.
• The time of submission.

We use this to send you our email updates and to detect signup abuse.

When you visit any page

Cloudflare hosts the site. Cloudflare may set the following cookies for security and load-balancing purposes:

• _cf_bm — bot management.
• cf_clearance, cf_chl_rc_i, cf_chl_rc_ni — challenge / CAPTCHA state.
• _cflb — load balancing.

These are strictly necessary cookies. They cannot be disabled by us. See Cloudflare's cookie policy for details.

The web server records standard request logs (URL requested, time, response status, user-agent, IP address) for security and operational purposes. These logs are not joined with subscriber records.

When ads are served

This site displays advertising via Google AdSense. Per Google's program requirements, we must tell you the following:

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.

Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to your users based on their visit to your sites and/or other sites on the Internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by Google by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can opt out of personalized advertising from many other vendors by visiting the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out page.

What we do not collect

• We do not run a separate analytics product (Google Analytics, Plausible, or similar) on the site.
• We do not request location data, microphone, camera, or contacts.
• We do not store credit card or payment information — there is no payment flow on this site.

How we use what we collect

• Send our email updates to subscribers.
• Detect and prevent abuse of the signup form.
• Operate the website (security, error monitoring, backups).
• Serve advertising via Google AdSense.

We do not sell subscriber information to anyone.

Sharing with service providers

• Supabase (database) — stores subscriber records.
• Cloudflare (hosting + CDN + security) — serves all pages.
• Google AdSense (advertising) — receives data necessary to serve ads.

Your choices

• Unsubscribe. Email admin@americancourant.com and we will mark your record as unsubscribed. A self-serve unsubscribe link is on our roadmap.
• Request deletion. Email admin@americancourant.com to have your subscriber record erased.
• Opt out of personalized ads. See "When ads are served" above.

Your rights — California, EU, and elsewhere

California residents have rights under the CCPA and CPRA, including the right to know what personal information we hold about you, the right to request deletion, and the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share subscriber email lists. To exercise other rights, email admin@americancourant.com.

EU / EEA / UK residents have rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR, including access, correction, deletion, restriction, and portability of personal data. To exercise these rights, email admin@americancourant.com. Our legal bases are legitimate interests (operating an opt-in newsletter and a public news website) and consent (where required for advertising cookies).

Children

This site is intended for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe we have, email admin@americancourant.com and we will delete it.

Updates to this policy

We may revise this notice. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced in the next email update.
